New Jersey Cardinals News Release


This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) downed the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets), 7-2. Miguel Aguero (4-3) won his 3rd straight decision as the Cardinals (25-22) pulled within 2.5 games of the first place Cyclones (28-20). Scott Hyde (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Brooklyn.

The Cards jumped on top of the Cyclones early, taking a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Sean Dobson singled to lead off the inning, and Steve Sherman singled one out later to put runners on the corners. Jake Mullinax tripled both in on the very next play and the Cards had a lead they would never relinquish. Steve Sherman drove in two big insurance runs in the 5th with a 2-run home run to set the final margin at 7-2.

Sherman lead the way offensively, going 2-for-2 with a home run, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Mullinax drove in two, and Mike Ferris, Casey Grimm and Wes Swackhamer all chipped in a hit and another RBI. Aguero went 7 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, while scattering 10 hits. Mike Gross, Dan Baysinger and Cory Doyne all made scoreless relief appearances for the Cardinals.

The Cards and Cyclones play their series finale at Brooklyn tomorrow night and then open a 3-game set with Hudson Valley on Tuesday and another 2-game series with Brooklyn on Friday. The Cards have home games on Tuesday, August 10, Thursday, August 12, and Saturday, August 14. Tuesday night there is a batting helmet giveaway and a post-game party at the Hampton House Bar & Grill; Thursday, Miller Lite Bat Bonanza sponsored by Miller Lite and the New Jersey Herald and Single Night presented by Miller Lite; and Saturday, Thunderstixx Giveway sponsored by Roccos Italian Deli, Family Catch on the Field and a Boy Scout Sleepover.
