Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
August 7, 2004 - The IronBirds (24-25) used a furious 4-run 9th inning comeback to take Saturday night's game to extra innings, before beating the Vermont Expos (21-25) by the score of 10-9 in front of 6,193 at Ripken Stadium. Arturo Rivas tied the game with 2 outs in the 9th before winning it with a 2-out RBI single to center in the bottom of the 11th.
In a 3 hour, 52 minute affair, the 'Birds knocked out 12 hits, with second baseman Levi Robinson leading the charge with a 3-5 night, adding 3 runs. Eric Sultemeier was 2-5 with a run scored. Fresh off the DL, Jake Duncan was 2-5 with 2 runs scored and 1 driven in.
Slugger CJ Smith went 1-3 with 2 runs and 3 batted in. Corey Shafer added 2 hits in 5 at bats.
With 2 on and 2 outs in the ninth, Rivas fought a ball off and hit it back up the middle, where the Vermont second baseman knocked the ball down to his backhand side. The run from 3rd scored, and when the second baseman picked himself up and made an errant throw, the tying run scampered home, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The tying and winning hits were Rivas' only 2 safeties of the night.
Dave Haehnel picked up the win, going to 2-0 on the year after he pitched 2 scoreless innings of 1 hit ball.
The 'Birds take game 1 of the 3 game set, and will send rehabbing righty Kurt Ainsworth to the hill for the middle game, Sunday at 4:05.
