Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The IronBirds (25-25) received a boost from a rehabbing Major Leaguer on Sunday afternoon, when Kurt Ainsworth made the start in the team's 5-4 win over Vermont (21-26). The righty went 3 innings and threw 37 pitches (23 strikes). Ainsworth faced the minimum, walked one, and struck out 4.

The 'Birds jumped ahead early with 3 runs in the second inning. They would add 2 in the 4th, enough to hold off Vermont's 4-run 9th inning rally.

Eric Sultemeier led off for the second time in two days, and went 1-4 with an RBI. Levi Robinson picked up 3 hits for the second game in a row, going 3-4 with an RBI.

The rest of the outfield joined Sultemeier with productive days at the plate, as Quincy Ascencion (2-4, 1 run) and Corey Shafer (2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) helped the 'Birds get back to .500.

Mike Costello added a 2-4 day, with 2 runs scored. Costello, Cody Wargo and Evan Brannon were a formidable bottom 3rd of the order, with the latter 2 picking up a hit and an RBI apiece.

Ryan Childs (2-2) got the win in relief, throwing 4 innings of scoreless, 1-hit ball. Dave Haehnel came in for the one-out save with the tying run on deck. After giving up a few hits, (runs charged to Kyle Boehm) Haehnel struck out the last batter of the game to pick up his league leading 11th save.

The IronBirds will look to complete the sweep tomorrow night, as Luis Ramirez gets the ball against Vermont at 7:05.
