Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - Nick Petree was terrific on the hill and the Palm Beach Cardinals got out of a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the ninth inning to slip by the Dunedin Blue Jays 1-0 on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The win snaps a four-game losing skid for Palm Beach.

Thanks to Petree's excellent outing and a Breyvic Valera sacrifice fly in the third, the Cardinals took a 1-0 advantage into the ninth inning. In his first inning of work in a Palm Beach uniform, Kyle Barraclough entered to face the heart of the Dunedin order.

K.C. Hobson led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center field and moved to third when Emilio Guerrero singled to shallow left. Derrick Chung drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

In the next at-bat, Barraclough got Nick Baligod to hit a ground ball to second, and Valera made the force out play at home. Palm Beach catcher Casey Rasmus touched the plate for the first out of the inning, and fired to third for the double play when he noticed Guerrero wasn't running to third. The heads up play by Rasmus turned a bases-loaded situation into runners at first and second with two outs in a blink of an eye.

Barraclough struck out the next batter to preserve the shutout and the victory. Despite the late-game chaos, Barraclough earned the save and helped Petree pick up his second win of the season.

Petree (2-0) allowed six hits and two walks in seven shutout innings in his second start for the Cardinals. Petree struck out three and retired nine straight over parts of the second inning through the fifth.

The right-hander only tossed 62 pitches through his first six innings, before coming across a slight bump in the road in the seventh. The Blue Jays (27-10) loaded the bases in the frame but Petree forced a groundout to end the Jay's best threat in the game until the ninth.

In two starts for Palm Beach this year, Petree has two wins, a 0.64 ERA (1ER/14.0IP), and has recorded nine strikeouts.

The Cardinals (17-21) scored the lone run of the game after back-to-back singles from David Washington and Alex Mejia to start the third. Ildemaro Vargas was hit by a Taylor Cole pitch to load the bases with one out. Valera drove a ball to center field to bring Washington home on the sacrifice fly and give the Beach Birds a 1-0 lead.

Danny Miranda Jr. relieved Petree for the eighth inning and struck out two in scoreless work before Barraclough came in to close the deal.

Cole (3-1) was great for Dunedin, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings of work. He struck out five on the evening.

The Cardinals and Blue Jays will play game three of the series on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. RH Thomas Lee (3-2, 3.66) will start for Palm Beach against RH Ben White (2-1, 2.65) for Dunedin. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
