Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VIERA, Fla. (May 13, 2014) - Jose Berrios dealt 6.1 scoreless innings to the Brevard County Manatees in a 6-0 shutout win for the Fort Myers Miracle on a rainy Tuesday evening at Space Coast Stadium.
Berrios (3-2) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and struck out a season-high eight with only two walks. Striking out six of the first nine hitters, Berrios did not allow a ball out of the infield until the fourth and surrendered just three hits. Berrios has not allowed a run in his past two starts, a stretch of 11.1 innings, and has struck out 15.
The Miracle picked up a run against Brevard County starter Damien Magnifico. In the second inning, Mike Gonzales coaxed a walk and then moved to third on a ground rule double to left from Travis Harrison. After Adam Brett Walker struck out, Tyler Grimes yanked an 0-2 pitch into left to bring in Gonzales and give the Miracle a 1-0 lead.
In the third, another lead-off walk hurt Magnifico (2-3). After issuing a free pass to Jonathan Murphy, Magnifico struck out Aderling Mejia. Then, the Manatees appeared to have Murphy in a run down, but an error by Orlando Arcia on a throw chasing him back to first allowed Murphy to move up to second. A Niko Goodrum ground out to second moved Murphy to third and Jorge Polanco singled to bring in a run.
The hit for Polanco extended his streak to 11 consecutive games, the longest on the team this season.
Fort Myers added run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Grimes before busting the game open in the seventh. The Miracle sent seven to the plate against Manatees reliever Austin Ross and scored three times. Goodrum picked up a RBI single, Polanco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Harrison doubled in the third run of the inning for a 6-0 lead.
Madison Boer went 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Brandon Peterson retired the side in the ninth despite allowing a walk and a hit.
The victory coupled with a St. Lucie Mets loss in the morning to the Tampa Yankees moves the Miracle into a tie for first place.
The Miracle (22-16) return to Space Coast Stadium in a little over 13 hours after tonight's game was finished for a 10:35 a.m. first pitch against the Manatees (20-17). Fans can listen to all the action with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Brice Zimmerman on www.miraclebaseball.com. The Head Quarters pregame show begins at 10:15 a.m.
