St. Lucie Mets News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 13, 2014) - The Tampa Yankees completed a ninth inning comeback to stun the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday afternoon at Tradition Field.

Down to their final out and trailing 2-1 in the ninth, the Yankees plated six runs and went on to claim a 7-2 victory. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Tampa and ended St. Lucie's four-game winning streak.

Beck Wheeler, who had not allowed a run in 12 innings, couldn't close out the game in the ninth. He walked the first two batters he faced, and after striking out two hitters, he threw a wild pitch that allowed Claudio Custodio to score from third and tie the game 2-2.

After Greg Bird walked, Dante Bichette, Jr., grounded a pitch just inside the third base line for a two-run double off of Wheeler that made it 4-2 Tampa.

Matt Snyder added another two-run double against Wheeler two batters later to put the Yankees up comfortably, 6-2. Trent Garrison completed the scoring with an RBI single off of Hunter Carnevale.

Alex Smith pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. Smith was one of five Tampa pitchers that limited the Mets to two runs and seven hits.

The Mets struck in the first when T.J. Rivera scored on a wild pitch. The Yankees tied the game in the third when Snyder delivered a two-out RBI single off of Mets starter Steven Matz.

The Mets took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when catcher Wes Wilson threw wildly to third base trying to pick off Dilson Herrera, who came home to score standing up.

St. Lucie could not hold the lead though. In the losing effort, Seth Lugo pitched three scoreless innings.

Matz labored through five innings, but only allowed one run on eight hits. He struck out six batters.

As a staff, the Mets struck out 12 Yankees for the second day in a row. That ties a season high.

Jairo Perez went 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead the Mets offensively. Rivera and Herrera each had two hits.

The Mets (22-16) and Yankees (17-20) continue their four-game series at Tradition Field on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It's All You Can Eat and a Seat. For $15 fans can get a ticket to the game plus all you can eat hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni salad, chips, $1 soda and water and $2 beer.
