Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - A two-out rally in the eighth inning led to a 4-2 win for the Tampa Yankees (16-16) over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (20-12) on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Yankees hit back-to-back home runs as Peter O'Brien's two-run shot put Tampa ahead and Eric Jagielo's solo bomb added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth.
Greg Bird went 1-for-4 in his Tampa Yankees debut, including a clutch RBI single with two outs in the eighth. Bird was activated from the 7-day disabled list prior to the start of the game.
Tampa starter Eric Wooten produced a quality start and received a no-decision. The southpaw allowed two runs on six hits and didn't allow a walk while tallying six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Lakeland broke a scoreless tie in the sixth. Curt Powell led off with a double and advanced on a single by Tyler Hanover. Powell then scored on a double play by Dixon Machado.
A solo home run by Conner Harrell gave the Flying Tigers a 2-0 lead in the seventh.
RHP Kevin Eichhorn pitched seven shutout innings for Lakeland, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out four.
Trent Garrison led off the bottom of the eighth against reliever Calvin Drummond (0-1). Garrison reached as Jeff Holm made an errant throw at first base. A wild pitch sent Garrison to second as Jake Cave struck out. One out later, Bird came through with an RBI single to right. O'Brien followed with a two-run blast (his 10th) to center field, giving Tampa the lead. Jagielo then cranked his seventh home run over the right field wall, giving the Yankees a 4-2 advantage.
RHP Alex Smith (1-1) relieved Wooten in the 8th and retired six of the seven batters he faced.
The Yankees travel to Lakeland on Thursday to continue the series with the Flying Tigers. Tampa LHP Dan Camarena (1-3, 3.34 ERA) will match up against RHP Jake Thompson (3-1, 0.97 ERA) for Lakeland. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m.
The T-Yanks return home for game three of the series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field. The first 300 fans through the gate will receive a Derek Jeter #31 TY shirt (the number he wore in 1994), sponsored by AllergEase.
