Yankees Drop Series as Tigers Take 5-3 Win

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (16-19) fell 5-3 as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-12) took the four-game series on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Tigers won three of the four games.

The Yankees got on the board first thanks to a two-run home run by Greg Bird. With Cito Culver on first, Bird blasted a ball into the Walgreens deck in right off of Lakeland starter Tanner Bailey. It was Bird's first home run of the season.

LHP Miguel Sulbaran pitched a solid first four innings before Lakeland rallied in the fifth.

With two outs, the Flying Tigers strung together four straight hits. Tyler Hanover, Drew Longley and Dixon Machado each doubled. Chad Wright added an RBI single, giving Lakeland a 3-2 lead.

Conner Harrell singled and Austin Green walked in the sixth before RHP Stefan Lopez relieved Sulbaran. One out later, Curt Powell delivered a two-RBI single, giving the Flying Tigers a 5-2 lead.

Sulbaran (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out two in his second start of the season.

The Lakeland bullpen surrendered only two hits after Bailey left with one out in the fifth.

Alex Burgos (1-1) got the win after pitching two and two-third innings, surrendering a hit and a walk while tallying a season-high five strikeouts.

Tampa scored its third run against RHP Calvin Drummond in the eighth. Zach Wilson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a single by Eric Jagielo. A wild pitch by Drummond gave Wilson third base before a second wild pitch scored him.

RHP Angel Nesbitt earned his fourth save of the season after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.

Wes Wilson and Matt Snyder each singled in their 2014 debuts for Tampa.

Up next, the T-Yanks hit the road to begin a four-game series in St. Lucie on Monday at Tradition Field.
