Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers have struggled to find hits at times this season, but that was not the case Thursday night in Springfield. The Drillers out-hit the Cardinals 11-6, but they still came up short on the scoreboard. The Cards took advantage of five walks from Tulsa pitchers and a pair of defensive errors to gain a 5-4 win at Hammons Field.
The Drillers gifted Springfield an early lead in the first inning when the Cards scored a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit. Tulsa starting pitcher Daniel Corcino walked two batters and hit two others to force home the game's first run. A throwing error by third baseman Daniel Mayora gave the Redbirds another run to make it 2-0.
Tulsa got one back in the top of the second when Brandon Dixon, Mayora and Yadir Drake opened the inning with three straight singles.
The Drillers tied the score at 2-2 when they began the fourth inning the same way, with the three consecutive hits coming from Lars Anderson, Dixon and Mayora.
The Cardinals got their first hits of the game in the fourth to go back in front. Aledmys Diaz greeted Tulsa reliever Ralston Cash with a leadoff single, and Patrick Wisdom followed with a run-scoring double to give Springfield a 3-2 lead.
The Redbirds tacked on single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pad their lead to 5-2. In the fifth, former Tulsa outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker tripled and scored on a single by Mike Ohlman.
Another Tulsa error helped the Cards plate what would prove to be the winning run. Charlie Tilson singled and stole second base. From there, Tilson also swiped third and scored on catcher Ali Solis' wild throw.
The Drillers made things uncomfortable for the Redbirds in the eighth inning. Travis Witherspoon and Lars Anderson singled in front of a two-run double from Mayora that made it a one-run game.
Tulsa would get no closer as Springfield reliever Kyle Barraclough set the side down in order in the top of the ninth to complete the victory for the Cardinals.
Mayora and Dixon accounted for over half of the Drillers offense in the game, picking up three hits each.
Tulsa will open a four-game series with Northwest Arkansas on Friday night in Springdale. Highly touted pitching prospect Jose De Leon is expected to make his Double-A debut for the Drillers. De Leon won his last four starts at Rancho Cucamonga and compiled a 4-1 record and a 1.67 ERA for the Quakes. He is scheduled to be activated prior to Friday's game. The Naturals will send Luke Farrell (0-0, 54.00 ERA) to the mound. Starting time is scheduled for 7:05PM at Arvest Ballpark.
