Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals dropped the final game of the four-game series in Midland on Thursday night, as the RockHounds picked up a 4-1 win over Springfield at CitiBank Ballpark.
Springfield was shutout for the first eight innings, getting a ninth-inning run to avoid being shutout for the first time this year.
The story on Thursday was Midland starter Ray Aguilar (4-3), who pitched seven shutout innings. The left-hander baffled Springfield hitters all night, allowing just four base-runners over seven frames. Aguilar struck out two and didn't issue a walk.
Midland got a pair of solo home runs from Brian Snyder, who finished the night 3-4.
Midland got to Springfield starter Stuart Pomeranz, scoring twice in the third. Vasili Spanos singled home Kurt Suzuki for a 1-0 lead. Brant Colamarino then reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Travis Buck for a 2-0 Midland advantage.
Snyder hit his first of two homers in the fourth, as Midland went up 3-0. Snyder homered again in the sixth, his fourth of the year, putting the RockHounds up 4-0.
After Snyder's second home run, Midland's Ronnie Merrill stepped to the plate, and watched Stuart Pomeranz miss with the first pitch, as it sailed over Merrill's head, all the way to the backstop. After a brief verbal exchange between Pomeranz and Merrill, Springfield Manager Chris Maloney came to the mound and removed Pomeranz in favor of reliever Chris Russ. Russ went on to work a total of 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Cards never threatened until the ninth, against Midland reliever Jeff Muessig. Rico Washington just missed a homer, doubling off the top of the wall in right-center field. Brian Martin followed with an RBI single, giving the Cards their first run of the night at 4-1. Muessig buckled down though, getting pinch-hitter Cody Haerther to line out to center field for the second out. Muessig retired Iker Franco to end it, as Franco popped up to center field for the final out of the game.
After starting the season with six consecutive winning decisions, Pomeranz (6-2) has now dropped his last two starts. The Springfield starter surrendered four runs on a season-high 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The loss for the Cards drops them to 31-21 on the year, now in a tie with Tulsa atop the North Division. Springfield sends Mike Parisi to the mound on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series in Frisco. The RoughRiders will go with left-hander John Danks. Game time from Frisco on Friday is 7:00pm. The Cardinals return to Hammons Field after their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th to face the Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers, in the final home stand of the first half.
