Iannetta blasts Missions
June 1, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
Catcher Chris Iannetta provided the offense and pitcher Juan Morillo turned in another quality start as the Tulsa Drillers defeated the San Antonio Missions 3-1 Thursday night. The victory allowed the Drillers to gain a split in their 4-game series in San Antonio. It also moved them into a first-place tie with Springfield in the North Division of the Texas League. The Cardinals were beaten by Midland 4-1.
For the first three innings of the game, Morillo and Missions starter Nate Mateo dominated. Mateo retired the first nine Tulsa hitters of the game before Troy Tulowitzki led off the fourth with a double into the gap in right field, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
Morillo had faced the minimum nine hitters before surrendering a lead off single to Sebastien Boucher in the fourth inning. Boucher would eventually come home with the game's first run on a single Bryan LaHair.
The lead was short-lived for the Missions as Iannetta led off the top of the fifth with his 7th home run of the season.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the 7th inning. With one out, Joe Koshansky walked. Iannetta then followed with a blast over the wall in center field for his second homer of the night to give Tulsa a 3-1 lead.
The Drillers bullpen then made sure the lead held. Jason Burch worked a scoreless 7th inning before turning the game over to Josh Newman and Manuel Corpas. Newman worked a perfect 8th inning with one strikeout, and Corpas worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts. The Tulsa bullpen has not allowed a run since May 23, a span of nine scoreless games.
For Corpas, it was his Texas League leading 15th save of the year, while Newman extended his scoreless streak to 18 consecutive games.
Morillo gained the win to improve his record to 5-2. He allowed five hits while striking out four and did not walk a batter.
Ian Stewart returned to the Tulsa lineup for the first time since May 20. The third baseman was 0-4 with four strikeouts.
The Drillers will now travel to Corpus Christi to begin a 3-game series with the Hooks on Friday night. Marc Kaiser (3-4, 5.17 ERA) will start the opener for Tulsa, while Josh Miller (6-4, 4.10 ERA) will take the mound for Corpus Christi. First pitch will be at 7:05PM.
