June 1, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(WICHITA, Kansas) - The Hooks took the frustration of losing six of their previous seven on the road out on the Wichita Wranglers on Thursday, pounding the Wranglers 11-3 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
They started off swinging early and never looked back as Hunter Pence got the Hooks offense going in the first when he pounded his league leading 16th home run of the year off of Wranglers starter Junior Herndon (4-3). The blast scored shortstop Ben Zobrist from second base, who had reached on a double.
The Hooks scored a run in the third when Jorge Cortes doubled in first baseman J.R. House, who extended his current hitting streak to 15 games with his two-out double in the inning, giving the Hooks a 3-0 lead.
The wheels completely fell off of Wranglers pitching in the seventh when the Hooks put up season highs in runs scored (7) and hits (8), ending the top of the fram with an 11-0 lead. During the inning Josh Anderson collected two base hits. Anderson was one of seven Hooks' starters to finish the game with two or more hits as the center fielder finished the game three-for-six.
Hooks' starter Chance Douglass (4-1) was strong in his start, allowing only two runs and five hits in six innings of work. Douglass had a shutout going into the top of the seventh but ran out of gas and allowed a double and a single to Wichita batters, leaving the game with an 11-1 lead and a runner on base. Reliever Monte Mansfield struggled in relief, allowing two runs on three walks and one hit and exited the game having only recorded one out. But Aaron Williams came in and got out of the jam by getting Billy Butler to fly out to center. Williams would go on to finish the game with shutout relief, sealing the Hooks win, 11-3. With the win, the Hooks remain one and a half games ahead of the Midland RockHounds in the Southern Division.
The Hooks will look to keep things going and seek a little revenge on Friday when they take on the Tulsa Drillers at Whataburger Field. Game time is set for 7:05 with Josh Miller (6-4, 4.10) taking on Tulsa starter Marc Kaiser (3-4, 5.17). As always, "Friday Fireworks" presented by Bud Light will follow the game and the Blues Brothers will also make several appearances throughout the game at Whataburger Field.
