Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Frisco RoughRiders got solid pitching from starting pitcher Matt Harrison on Thursday night, knocking off the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 6-3 at Hammons Field. The Cards drop to 0-4 in season openers in franchise history.

Harrison (1-0) was masterful, taking a shutout into the sixth inning. The left-hander, acquired from Atlanta in last season's Mark Teixeira trade, allowed just one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings for his first win of the year.

Springfield starter PJ Walters (0-1) pitched well, but gave up some crucial two-out hits. Frisco tallied three runs in five innings against Walters, scoring three times on three two-out RBI hits. After a Cards' error in the first inning, Taylor Teagarden knocked in Elvis Andrus for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Adam Fox doubled and later scored on a single by Craig Gentry, putting Frisco up 2-0. Gentry and Andrus were at it again in the fourth, picking up consecutive two-out hits, with Andrus singling home Gentry for a 3-0 lead.

Frisco added a pair in the sixth against Cards' reliever Nick Webber. With the bases loaded and one out, Gentry was hit by a pitch to force in a run. A fielder's choice off the bat of Andrus made it a 5-0 game.

Springfield finally broke through against Harrison in the sixth, as Shane Robinson got the inning going with a single, his second of three hits. Frisco was unable to turn a Cody Haerther ground ball into a double play, allowing Robinson to score from third to make it 5-1.

The Cards got a pair of runs in the seventh, as Robinson delivered again. His third hit of the game knocked in Luke Gorsett, making it 5-2. Frisco catcher Taylor Teagarden was charged with a passed ball, allowing Tyler Greene to score from third to make it 5-3. With the tying runs on board, Frisco reliever Chris Michalak got Jose Martinez to ground out to end the threat.

Frisco got to Springfield reliever Jonathan Mikrut for a run in the ninth, as Chris Davis picked up an RBI single to knock in John Mayberry to cap the scoring at 6-3.

Former Missouri State Bear Bob Zimmermann made his Springfield debut with two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three while yielding just one hit.

Springfield went 1-2-3 against Frisco closer Warner Madrigal, who earned his first save of the year.

The Cards (0-1) look to earn their first win on Friday night, sending Jaime Garcia to the mound against Scott Feldman of Frisco (1-0). Tickets still remain for Friday night at Hammons Field, the second game of the six-game home stand. Game time is 7:10pm and fans will receive a 2008 Magnet Schedule thanks to Great Southern, as well as enjoy a Post-Game Fireworks Spectacular thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
