New Jersey Cardinals News Release

The New Jersey Cardinals (St Louis Cardinals) defeated the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) 9-2 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to take the first game of a three game set. With the win, the Cardinals moved back to one game of .500 at 18-19, while the loss dropped the Ironbirds to 12-24. Cardsstarter Nick Webber (4-1) struck out a season-high 10 batters in 7 innings and Chad Gabriel had three hits and drove in 2 runs as the Cardinals won their fourth straight against Aberdeen. Reliever Byrce Chamberlain took the loss to fall to 1-1.

Webber was perfect through 4 innings before a lead off a leadoff walk to right fielder Keith Reed in the fifth led to Aberdeens first run. Reed moved to third on a single and scored on designated hitter Mark Fleishers single through the hole at short. Webber worked out of further trouble by getting second baseman Jose Zapata to ground into a double play to end the inning.

The Cardinals struck back in their half of the 5th against Chamberlain, who started the inning in place of Aberdeen starter Dave Hernandez. Left fielder Casey Rowlett led off with a walk and went to third on Tyler Greenes single. Adam Rodgers worked a walk, before Craig Newton singled to score Rowlett. Gabriel then ripped a two-run single through the hole at short to plate Greene and Rodgers. Daniel Nelson was the sixth straight batter to reach with a single to score Newton, but Chamberlain was able to escape further damage when Adam Morris lined into a double play and Kevin Richmond grounded out to end the inning.

Webber, who lowered his ERA to 1.76, gave up just the two hits in the fifth and walked only one. His ten strikeouts bested the previous season high of 8, set by Mitchell Boggs on July 14 against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Devil Rays).

Fleisher hit a solo home run in the eighth off Quinton Robertson to cut the lead to 5-2. But the Cardinals added 4 insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Rowletts RBI triple.

The two teams meet again Friday, July 29th for the middle game of the three game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. Boggs (1-3, 6.49) is set to start for the Cards, while Aberdeen counters with Radhames Liz (4-2, 1.00), who leads the NY-Penn league in ERA (1.00) and strikeouts (53 in 36 IP). The game also features the fifth night of the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS Field of Dreamschallenge, in which one lucky fan will drive home in a brand new Chrysler PT cruiser convertible. Fans are still eligible to enter to win. World Auto Group and the New Jersey Herald are also sponsoring post game fireworks.
