
Spinners drop game to Expos

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lowell Spinners literally dropped their game to the Vermont Expos on Thursday night.
The Spinners committed six errors, three coming on dropped throws from another fielder and one on a dropped line drive, which led to three unearned runs as Vermont defeated Lowell 5-3 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Centennial Field.
The Expos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Francisco Plasencia's fourth home run of the season. They made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the third as leadoff batter Eduardo Nunez reached when first baseman Jason Twomley dropped a throw from shortstop Jed Lowrie and then scored on a Plasencia groundout.
The Spinners tied the game with an unearned run of their own in the fourth inning and Matt Stachowsky's fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning to knot the game 2-2.
But Vermont got its two-run lead back in the bottom of the sixth as the Expos scored two unearned runs with the help of three Lowell errors. Dee Brown led off the inning when his line drive to Lowrie at short was dropped for an error. Later in the inning, Brown scored from third when third baseman Zak Farkes' throw home to get Brown was dropped by catcher Stachowsky for a 3-2 Expos lead.
Luis Apodaca followed with a groundball to first base that was booted by Twomley for another error and another Vermont unearned run. The Expos got its fifth run of the game, and second earned run, in the seventh on a leadoff double from Mike Daniel and one-out RBI single from Brown.
Lowell got a run back in the eighth on a one-out triple from Willie Mota and run-scoring wild pitch. The Spinners then got the go ahead run to the plate with two outs in the ninth with a one-out walk and two-out infield single, but Expos reliever Neohmar Ochoa came on to strikeout Dominic Ramos to end the game and pick up his third save of the year.
Expos starter Craig Stammen (3-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits over six innings for the victory, while reliever Clint Everts allowed one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 2.2 innings in his first appearance of the season for Vermont. Lowell starter Mario Pena (4-4) allowed four runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings to take the loss.
Daniel was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Plasencia had two RBI for Vermont (11-26), which has won three of its last four games after losing 10 of its previous 11. Mota was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Stachowsky added two hits for Lowell (20-17).
The two teams will play game two of their three-game series at Centennial Field on Friday night. There will be a special appearance by Zooperstars, a group of inflatable animal mascots with famous sports names, during the game which begins at 7:05 p.m.
