
Cardinals Take Series Against Devil Rays, Win Game Three in 8-5 Decision

The Johnson City Cardinals (6-4) defeated the Princeton Devil Rays (2-8) by a score of 8-5 at Howard Johnson Field on Wednesday night. With the win the Cardinals win the series.
The Cardinals' took the early lead in the bottom of the first with two runs batted in by Brandon Yarbrough (Ellerbee, N.C.). Billy Becher (Chandler, Ariz.) then batted in Yarbrough for the third and final run of the inning.
The Devil Rays were held scoreless in the top of the second, while the Cardinal's increased their lead by two runs. Left fielder Brian Schwarze (Chesterfield, Mo.) increased the lead by one run when he came in off of sacrifice fly by Simon Williams (Portland, Maine). Sandy Diaz (Azua, Dominican Republic) furthered the Cardinal's lead when he brought in José Delgado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) on a double bringing the score 5-0 in Johnson City's favor.
Both teams were scoreless in the next two innings. Princeton then broke the silence in the top of the fifth scoring two runs. The Devil Rays tied it up in the top of the seventh with runs by Blake Schultz, Shane Shelley, and Brandon Rousseve.
Juan Lucena (Lara, Venezuela) scored for the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead with a score of 6-5 off of a double by Yarbrough, it was his third RBI of the night.
Delgado then came up in the bottom of the eighth to bat in two insurance goals. The runs were scored by Tony Granadillo (Valencia, Venezuela) and Williams.
Johnson City's pitcher Dan Spring (Washington D.C.) improves to 2-1, while Princeton's Ken Brock is dealt his first loss. Mark Worrell Jr. (Boynton Beach, Fla.) was credited with his first save.
The Cardinals travel to Kingsport for one game on Thursday and then will return home to play host to the Kingsport Mets at Howard Johnson Field for two nights beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets to a home game please call the Johnson City Cardinals Office at (423) 461-4866.
