Cardinals Split Doubleheader with Naturals

Springdale, AR - After being rained out on Thursday and postponed on Friday, the Springfield Cardinals and NW Arkansas Naturals finally got on the field Saturday for a doubleheader. .

Under sunny skies, Springfield would strike first against NW Arkansas in the top of the first inning. After a one out walk by Tony Cruz and a double by Matt Carpenter, Steven Hill reached on a fielder's choice allowing Cruz to score from third to grab an early 1-0 lead.

In the 2nd inning, Cardinals' starter Nick Additon would allow a lead off home run to Eric Hosmer, who was making his Double-A debut, to tie the game 1-1.

Additon would not allow another base runner until the 5th inning when the Naturals got back to back singles from Paulo Orlando and Jamie Romak. After a sacrifice bunt, Chris McConnell blasted a three-run home run into the bullpen in left to take a 4-1 lead.

In the 6th, Gary Daley came in out of the bullpen and did not fare well as he allowed five runs on three hits including RBI singles from Paulo Orlando and Jeff Howell in just 1/3 of an inning. Jason Buursma would come in and allow a two run single to Jarrod Dyson and a two-run triple to Derrick Robinson to put the Naturals up 10-1. The Cardinals would be retired in order in the 9th to lose game one 10-1.

In game two, the Cardinals would capitalize on three Naturals walks in the first inning as Daryl Jones lined a ball off the glove of Clint Robinson at first base allowing a run to score to put Springfield up 1-0.

Springfield would add to their lead in the 3rd inning as Matt Carpenter led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Steven Hill to lead 2-0. Chris Swauger followed with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Curt Smith the put the Cardinals up 3-0.

In the 4th, the Cardinals got another insurance run as Antone DeJesus walked and Tommy Pham singled before Steven Hill singled to right field to swell the Springfield lead to 4-0.

Cardinals' starter Brian Broderick would cruise until the 6th inning allowing no runs on just three hits. With one out in the 6th, Jarrod Dyson singled to center and Derrick Robinson singled to right before Johnny Giavotella bounced a ball to third. The Cardinals got the lead runner at second, but the return throw to first was in the dirt and got by Curt Smith at first allowing Dyson to score an unearned run to make the score 4-1.

Springfield's offense exploded in the 7th inning scoring seven runs highlighted by a solo home run by Steven Hill, an RBI single from Daryl Jones, an RBI single by Jermaine Curtis. With the bases still loaded, the Cardinals batted around allowing Matt Carpenter to single home a run and allowed Hill to come to the plate again with the bases loaded and he delivered a bases clearing double to put the Cardinals up 11-1.

The Naturals would get to Broderick in the bottom of the 7th inning getting four straight hits including an RBI double by Anthony Seratelli and an RBI single from Ben Theriot before Broderick was taken from the game. Blake King would enter and allow a sacrifice fly to Jarrod Dyson to make the score 11-4, but King would get Derrick Robinson to pop out to end the ball game earning the Cardinals the doubleheader split.

Springfield will conclude their series with NW Arkansas Sunday night at 6pm. The Cardinals will send left hander Ryan Kulik (7-2) to the mound against left hander Chris Dwyer (2-0) of the Naturals.
