Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - After being postponed due to rain on Saturday night, the Springfield Cardinals and Tulsa Drillers hooked up for a double header Sunday evening at ONEOK Field.
In game one, the Cardinals sent John Gast, winner of two straight starts, to the hill against fellow lefty and former 1st round pick Christian Friedrich of the Drillers.
The Cardinals would strike first in game one, and in a big way, plating four first inning runs. Friedrich would walk three of the first four batters he faced before Donovan Solano blasted a grand slam to deep left center field to put Springfield in front 4-0.
Springfield added two more runs in the 2nd on a two run double by Ryan Jackson scoring Gast and Daryl Jones. For Gast, it was his first professional hit in his first at bat. The Cardinals would add two more in the 3rd against Friedrich in the 3rd on a two-run homer from Audry Perez to put Springfield in front 8-0. Friedrich ended his night going just three innings allowing either runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
John Gast ran into a little trouble in the 4th allowing a lead off single to Bronson Sardinha. After a fielder's choice groundout, Erick Wetzel doubled to left center bringing home to first run of the game for Tulsa bringing the score to 8-1.
Tulsa would get another run on the scoreboard in the 6th against Gast on a solo homerun off the bat of Tommy Field, his 15th of the season, to cut the deficit to six runs, 8-2. Gast would allow another run in the 7th on a bloop RBI single by Wilin Rosario, but retired Tommy Field on a ground out to end the game throwing the first complete game of the season for a Springfield pitcher in the 9-3 victory.
In game two, the Cardinals backed-up Gast with another lefty in Nick Additon looking to continue his dominance against the Drillers this year. Opposing Additon was righty Rob Scahill who had gone 2-0 in two starts against Springfield at ONEOK Field.
After three scoreless innings, the Drillers were the first to get on the scoreboard in game two in the bottom of the fourth. On the first pitch Nick Additon threw, Mike Mitchell launched a solo homer into the bleachers in left. Additon retired the next two batters before falling being Tommy Field. On a 3-0 pitch, Field blasted a solo homer to left to bring the score to 2-0.
With the Cardinals threatening in the 5th after a two out walk and a single, Additon would be lifted after four innings on the mound to be pinch hit for. Daryl Jones came up and bounced out to short to end the inning with Springfield still trailing.
Scott Schneider came in out of the bullpen and allowed Scahill to reach on an error. After a single by Tim Wheeler, Mike Mitchell singled to left to plate another run bring the score to 3-0.
The Cardinals finally got on the board in the 6th when Matt Adams blasted a solo homerun, his 26th of the season, to bring the score to 3-1. Eric Duncan followed with a single bringing the tying run to the plate, by Zack Cox bounced back to the pitcher to end the inning.
Tulsa would add a big insurance run in the bottom of the 6th when Lars Davis hit a bloop single to shallow center on an 0-2 pitch against reliever Nick Greenwood to score Tommy Field bring the Drillers lead to 4-1.
Rob Scahill went out for the top of the 7th to finish the game and did just that allowing a lead off single to Donovan Solano before retiring the next three batters in order to split the doubleheader with a 4-1 win for Tulsa.
Springfield will conclude their four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers Monday night at 7:05pm. The Cardinals will send right hander Michael Blazek to the mound against righty Alex White of the Drillers at ONEOK Field.
