Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - After a doubleheader split on Sunday night against the Drillers, the Cardinals still had a chance to take three of four from their division rivals with a victory on Monday night at ONEOK Field.
Michael Blazek took the ball for Springfield looking to rebound after throwing a season low three innings his last time out against Arkansas. Alex White made a major league rehab start for the Drillers and was scheduled to throw three innings or 45 pitches before Josh Sullivan was to coming in for Tulsa.
The Drillers would be the first to strike on Monday night. After Blazek struck out the side in the first, Tulsa strung together three straight hits with one out to score the game's first run on an RBI single from Erick Wetzel. A groundout from the pitcher moved runners to second and third before Hector Gomez drove in two runs with a single with two strikes to give the Drillers a 3-0 lead.
In the 3rd, Bronson Sardinha launched a solo homer to right off of Blazek to make the score 4-0. For Blazek, it was the 24th homerun allowed on the season which leads the Texas League.
Springfield finally threatened on offense in the 4th getting a one out single from Matt Adams and a two out walk to Zack Cox against reliever Josh Sullivan. Jermaine Curtis followed with a line drive to right that was caught to end the inning.
In the 5th, the Cardinals finally cracked the scoreboard after Daryl Jones tripled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI ground out by Audry Perez to cut the Drillers lead to 4-1.
Mother Nature came calling bringing rain before the top of the 6th inning could begin delaying the game for over an hour. With one out in the inning, Matt Adams walked and Aaron Luna singled before Zack Cox doubled down the right field line to score two to bring the Cardinals within a run, 4-3. Unfortunately for Springfield, Cox was thrown between second and third after rounding second base too far. Jermaine Curtis would follow with a single, but would be stranded at first to end the inning.
Francisco Samuel came in to begin the bottom of the 6th inning, but he would no finish the frame. In fact, he did not retire a single batter allowing two hits, three walks including a four pitch walk to reliever Stephen Dodson and two wild pitches allowing two runs to come across. Sam Freeman inherited a bases loaded mess and walked the first batter he faced forcing in another run making the score 7-3. After a strike out, Ben Paulsen drove in a run on a fielder's choice ground out bring it to an 8-3 lead. Wilin Rosario then popped a ball up to right field that Aaron Luna dropped allowing two more runs to come across, but Matt Adams throw to third to try and get Rosario went down the left field line scoring Rosario to make it 11-3. A double by Bronson Sardinha and an RBI single by Matt McBride capped the scoring for the Drillers at eight runs on four hits with the Cardinals issuing four walks and throwing two wild pitches.
The eight run inning for the Drillers tied the most scored in one inning by an opposing team against Springfield this season and was too much to overcome for the Cardinals as they split the four game series.
After playing 26 straight games, Springfield will enjoy their first off day since mid July Tuesday before they begin a six game homestand beginning with the San Antonio Missions at 7:07pm Wednesday night at Hammons Field. The Cardinals will send right hander Shelby Miller to the mound against righty Pedro Hernandez of the Missions. Great tickets are still available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
