Big Inning Undoes Travs Sunday

Springdale, Arkansas - The Northwest Arkansas Naturals scored six runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Arkansas Travelers, 8-5, on Sunday at Arvest Ballpark.

During the sixth the Naturals collected six base hits including three high choppers for singles and took advantage of a fielding error by Darwin Perez to score three unearned runs.

Luis Jimenez and Roberto Lopez each had two hits the lead the Travs and Orlando Mercado hit a three-run homer (4).

The Travs took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning thanks to Mercado's homer in the fifth inning.

Chris Pettit knocked in Luis Jimenez with a two-out double in the sixth inning increasing their lead to 5-2.

Andrew Taylor had limited the Naturals to two runs in the first five innings stranding six runners in the process.

He opened the sixth with a walk to Wil Myers, then Nick Francis went deep to left field (3) scoring two runs bringing NW Arkansas within a 5-4 score.

Taylor was pulled after Mario Lisson singled and Loek Van Mil was summoned from the bullpen.

Lisson stole second and took third when Mercado threw wildly which forced the Travs to play the infield up.

With one out Derrick Robinson beat a chopper into the hard dirt in front of home plate that bounced over Perez at shortstop knocking Lisson in with the tying run.

After stealing second and advancing to third on another high chopper single by Christian Colon.

When Jeff Bianchi tried a safety squeeze, Van Mil pounced on the ball and fed Mercado who tagged Robinson for the second out.

It seemed Van Mil would get out of the inning but Perez botched a routine ground ball near second base to load the bases for Anthony Seratelli.

Van Mil battled him to 2-2 before Seratelli poked a two-run single to center giving NWA th e lead.

Van Mil then hit Myers to reload the bases and Francis followed with the third high chopper single that bounced over Perez at short and Romak scored for an 8-5 Naturals lead.

Blaine Hardy ensured the lead would stand as the Naturals lefty fired three innings of scoreless relief saving his fourth game.

Van Mil (3-5) was victimized by poor defense and bad luck suffering the loss with three unearned runs allowed over one inning pitched.

Both Christian Scholl and David Carpenter worked one scoreless relief inning.

Time of game was 2:52 and the paid attendance was 3,980.

The Travs and Naturals wrap up their series on Monday night at Arvest Ballpark with Matt Shoemaker (10-2, 2.47) pitching against Naturals lefty Will Smith (10-8, 4.52). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
