Springfield Cardinals News Release
Little Rock, AR - Two straight days of three run leads lost against the Arkansas Travelers had the Cardinals ready to wipe the slate clean. Good thing, because Wednesday was the first day of the second half giving new hope to every team in the league.
In Wednesday's game, Springfield sent 20-year-old righty Carlos Martinez to the hill in his second AA start against Matt Oye who the Cardinals torched for nine runs at Hammons Field 10 days ago.
For the first time in the series, Springfield did not score first. The Travelers got a lead-off single frm Travis Witherspoon to start the bottom of the first. Jean Segura followed with a sacrifice bunt before Roberto Lopez doubled down the left field line to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead.
The Travs added another run in the 3rd as Witherspoon doubled, moved to third on Segura's infield hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Mount to give Arkansas a 2-0 advantage.
Again, Witherspoon wreaked havoc against the Cardinals in the 5th as he reached on an error by Greg Garcia to start the frame. After a stolen base, a fly ball moved him to third and he would score on Roberto Lopez' second RBI double of the game bringing the Arkansas lead to 3-0.
Cardinals' starter Carlos Martinez, again working on a limited pitching count, threw just three innings allowing two runs on five hits and did not strike out a batter. Jesse Simpson worked three innings allowing one unearned run on two hits. Justin Wright pitched in two scoreless innings.
The offense mustered just three hits in suffering their fourth straight loss.
Springfield will conclude their four-game set with the Arkansas Travelers tomorrow night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will send Kevin Thomas to the mound against AJ Schugel of the Travs.
The Cardinals will not return home until Friday, June 29th after the All-Star break to host the Frisco RoughRiders in a three game series. Every Friday is a Fireworks Friday thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
