Cardinals return home with win over Astros, 9-4

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Johnson City Cardinals made it four straight wins in Tuesday's home opener against the Greeneville Astros thanks to a 9-4 decision.

The win boosted the Cardinals to 16-5, the Appalachian League's best record by four games. Johnson City and Greeneville will play the series' second game Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Johnson City gained the lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning which included a home run from David Washington. It was his second of the season and Anthony Garcia was on third at the time as the Cardinals posted the tying score and go-ahead run. While Washington was at the plate a wild pitch allowed Kolby Byrd to score. Garcia had a RBI double earlier in the fourth.

Greeneville scored three times in the top of the fourth with the final two runs on Darwin Rivera's double to left.

Garcia led off Johnson City's sixth with a home run to left center and Neal Pritchard drove in two more runs with a single to right. Garcia ended the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The home team got scores in the fifth and eighth innings for the nine in the game.

Chase Davidson hit his fifth home run of 2011 in the eighth for the Astros.

Steven Ramos only had one hit, but he stole his league-leading 13th base of the season.

Kyle Hald came in for the Cardinals during the top of the fifth where he completed four innings of relief for the win, his second of the Appalachian League season. Hald gave up the one run on two hits with five strikeouts.

Greeneville's Tyson Perez lasted 3 1/3 innings in the start with four runs allowed on three hits. Perez worked through the first three innings perfect before the Cardinals flew onto the scoreboard in the fourth.

At the plate Davidson was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and the home run for the Astros, the only multi-hit effort on the squad.
