Springfield Cardinals News Release
Little Rock, AR - The Cardinals embarked on an eight-game road trip starting with four in Little Rock against the Travelers.
Springfield sent All-Star righty Trevor Rosenthal to the hill in game one against fellow All-Star Ariel Pena of Arkansas.
After a scoreless first inning, Major League Rehabber Matt Carpenter drew a lead-off walk in the 2nd. Chris Swauger followed with a single and Greg Garcia walked with one out to load the bases. With Travis Tartamella at the plate, Ariel Pena uncorked a wild pitch scoring Carpenter giving Springfield a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals added another run in the 3rd inning. Jermaine Curtis reached on a one out walk and Oscar Taveras followed with a single. With Chris Swauger at the plate and two out, Pena threw a ball in the dirt that advanced Curtis to third. Catcher Carlos Ramirez tried to throw behind Taveras at first and airmailed the throw scoring Curtis making the score 2-0.
Arkansas responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the 3rd as Jean Segura singled with one out, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Renny Osuna to cut the Cardinals' lead in half, 2-1.
In the 5th, the Cardinals added two more runs to their tally as Jermaine Curtis scored Kolten Wong on an RBI groundout and Oscar Taveras launched his 13th homer of the season, a solo shot, to give Springfield a 4-1 advantage.
Trevor Rosenthal entered the 5th leading by three, but would finish the frame up only a run. A lead-off walk and one out hit and run single put runners on the corners. Renny Osuna drove in a run due to an error by Greg Garcia to make it 4-2. An errant pick off attempt to first by Rosenthal allowed the second run of the inning to score making it 4-3. The righty struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. He finished with five innings pitched allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts.
Kevin Thomas came in out of the bullpen in the 6th and after retiring the first batter, allowed a solo homer to Carlos Ramirez, just his 2nd of the year, to tie the game 4-4.
In the 7th, Deryk Hooker came in out of the Cardinals' pen and allowed an infield single to Darwin Perez to start the inning. A stolen base and a sacrifice bunt later, Renny Osuna delivered another RBI groundout to put the Travs in front for the first time, 5-4.
The Cardinals had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in each the 7th and 8th inning, but that clutch hit eluded them and dropped the first game of the series 5-4.
Springfield will continue their four-game set with the Arkansas Travelers tomorrow night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will send Richard Castillo to the mound against Mike Piazza of the Travs.
The Cardinals will not return home until Friday, June 29th after the All-Star break to host the Frisco RoughRiders in a three game series. Every Friday is a Fireworks Friday thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
