Springfield Cardinals News Release

Little Rock, AR - Wrapped up in a tight divisional race heading towards the end of the first half, the Cardinals faced a must win game against the Arkansas Travelers Monday night at Dickey-Stephens Park.

Trailing by 2.5 games with nine games to play, Springfield sent All-Star Maikel Cleto to the mound who had struck out nine batters in each of his last two starts. Starting against him was fellow All-Star Garrett Richards of the Travelers.

Just like Sunday night, the Cardinals would strike first against Garrett Richards in the 1st inning. After D'Marcus Ingram was hit by a pitch, he stole second and scored on Steven Hill's RBI single to right field giving Springfield a 1-0 lead.

Maikel Cleto stranded two Travelers runners on base in the first, but did not have the same result in the second as Arkansas loaded the bases with one out on a hit by pitch and back to back singles. Mike Trout then came to the plate and singled through the left side to score two to put the Travs in front 2-1. Cleto rebounded to induce a double play to get out of the second inning without and further damage being done.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 5th when Arkansas blew the game open and knocked Cleto from the game. After a lead off double by Trout and a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Luis Jimenez popped a ball up on the infield that was lost and fell for a single, putting runners on the corners. Roberto Lopez followed with an RBI single before Gabe Jacobo drove in a run on a fielder's choice. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Angel Castillo singled to left to score Lopez to make it a 5-1 game and knock Cleto from the game after just 4.1 innings of work. Chase Reid came into the game with the bases loaded and got a ground ball out from Carlos Ramirez that produced a run to bring the score to 6-1. Cleto allowed a season high six runs on 10 hits while striking out just two.

The Travers plated another run in the 6th against Reid when Trout was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Luis Jimenez to make it a 7-1 game.

Springfield would answer in the 7th as Alex Castellanos walked, moved to second on a ground out and two third on Audry Perez' single to right. With runners on the corners, Charlie Cutler singled through the right side to score Castellanos to bring the score to 7-2. After a pop out, Ryan Jackson doubled down the right field line to score Perez to bring Springfield within four, 7-3. D'Marcus Ingram would strike out to end the inning stranding runners at second and third.

Garrett Richards would pitch through the 8th inning for Arkansas allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six to earn his 7th win of the season tying him for the league lead.

Springfield will continue their four-game series in Little Rock, Arkansas against the Travelers Tuesday night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will send All-Star Michael Blazek to the mound against left hander Trevor Reckling of the Travelers.
