Cardinals Fall One Shy in 9-8 Loss

Little Rock, AR - With a victory Thursday night against the Travelers, the Cardinals would return home with a 4-4 road trip, a place where Springfield has struggled during the beginning of the season.

A winner of three straight starts, Tyler Lyons got the baseball for the Cardinals against right Orangel Arenas who allowed eight runs against Springfield last week.

The Cardinals had a good scoring chance in the 1st after getting back to back one out singles putting runners on the corners, but a pop up and a ground stranded two on base.

Arkansas did not miss out on their scoring chances in the 1st inning as the first four batters reached on a walk and three singles including an RBI hit by Roberto Lopez. With one out, Carlos Ramirez cleared the bases with a double giving the Travs a 4-0 lead.

The Travelers added one more in the 2nd as Angel Castillo doubled to left, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Renny Osuna to make it 5-0.

In the 6th, the Cardinals finally pushed a run across as Greg Garcia doubled and Xavier Scruggs brought him home with an RBI single to get Springfield within four, 5-1.

After Tyler Lyons left after the 5th, Justin Wright came in out of the bullpen and allowed two runs in the 6th on an RBI double from Darwin Perez and an RBI single by Angel Castillo to swell the lead to 7-1.

The Cardinals got one of those runs back in the 7th as Kolten Wong doubled, went to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Swauger to make the score 7-2. But Springfield stranded two more on base to run the total to 10.

The Travs tacked on two more against Jorge Rondon in the 8th on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Angel Castillo and a wild pitch brought home another run to give Arkansas a commanding 7-2 lead.

In the 9th, the Cardinals mounted a huge comeback. The inning began with a walk and a hit batter. After a pop up, Kyle Conley walked to load the bases. Jake Shaffer followed with an RBI single to score Wong to make it 9-3. A bases loaded walk to Greg Garcia scored Jermaine Curtis to bring it to a 9-4 game. Matt Oye came in relief and struck out Audry Perez for the second out. Xavier Scruggs followed with a bases loaded walk to force in Conley and Oscar Taveras' pinch-hit two run single scored two more to bring the Cards within two, 9-7. Wong came up for a second time and singled to right to score another run to make it a 9-8 game and moved Taveras, the tying run, to third. Curtis battled with Oye, but eventually flied to left to end the game.

The Cardinals went 3-5 on the road trip, but earned a series split with the Travelers.

Springfield will return home tomorrow for a quick four game series against the Tulsa Drillers. The Cardinals will send Scott Gorgen to the mound against Parker Frazier. Game time is scheduled for 7:08pm.
