Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - For the second night in a row, the Springfield Cardinals defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. The final score was 7-2 thanks to strong pitching and clusters of an offense attack.
The Naturals put two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. The first run scored on an RBI double play groundout off the bat of former Springfield Cardinal Eric Duncan. Johnny Whittleman then came to the plate and hit a solo home run to left center field.
In the bottom of the second inning, Springfield batted around the lineup scoring five runs. It began with a two-run double to center field by Travis Tartamella with the bases loaded and no outs. The hit was just Tartamella's second of the season for Springfield. Kolten Wong then hit a three-run homerun to right field two batters later putting the Cardinals up 5-2.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Jake Shaffer and Xavier Scruggs supplied two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Naturals' starter Elisaul Pimentel (2-5) pitched five innings surrendering seven runs on ten hits. Springfield scored off him in bunches, which included a five run second inning and a two run fifth inning.
Scott Gorgen (3-5) settled down after a two-run first for six straight scoreless innings. He also struck out seven Naturals batters. The victory is Gorgen's first since May 25 at San Antonio.
Springfield will conclude their four-game series with the NW Arkansas Naturals tomorrow night at 6:08pm. The Cardinals will send Seth Maness to the mound against Chris Dwyer of the Naturals.
