Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers drew a few steps closer to a playoff berth on Friday night in Little Rock, Arkansas thanks to a few timely hits and a great performance on the mound by Parker Frazier. The 2-1 victory over the Arkansas Travelers, coupled with a NW Arkansas loss to Springfield dwindled the Drillers magic number to 1.
Frazier, who has suffered from a lack of run support this season, did not need much help from the offense on this night. He held the Travs hitters scoreless with only 3 scattered hits over 7 innings while walking 1 and striking out 2.
Tulsa broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth after Tim Torres and Jose Gonzalez both walked to start the inning. Torres moved to third base on a wild pitch to Mike Mitchell and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Rutledge.
Gonzalez also came in to score thanks to a 2-out triple by Angelys Nina that was nearly caught by a diving Angel Castillo in center field. The RBI was Nina's eighth in his last ten games.
Arkansas' only threat came off of reliever Josh Sullivan in the bottom of the eighth inning. A leadoff single by Darwin Perez and a walk to Jean Segura set the stage for a sacrifice bunt by Renny Osuna. With one out and the tying runs in scoring position, Sullivan was able to entice a groundout from Ryan Mount. After allowing one run to score via a wild pitch, Sullivan battled back to strikeout Roberto Lopez and keep the Drillers lead intact.
Coty Woods came in and threw a perfect 1-2-3 inning to record his 11th save of the year. Woods has only allowed 1 run in 27.1 innings of work in 2012.
The Drillers can clinch the Texas League North Division 1st Half Championship and a playoff berth (first since 2007) on Saturday with a win over Arkansas. Tulsa will send ace Edwar Cabrera (6-4, 3.25 ERA) to the hill to face off against AJ Schugel (3-5, 2.96 ERA) for the Travelers. Both starters were named to the North Division All-Star team on Thursday.
