SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Springfield Cardinals used a five-run second inning to top the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 7-2 on Saturday night at Hammons Field. The win gives the Cardinals a one-game lead over the Naturals for second place in the Texas League's North Division.
The Naturals (34-33) got on the board first for the first time in their three game series against the Cardinals. Paulo Orlando led off with a single and later scored when Eric Duncan grounded into a double play to make it 1-0. Johnny Whittleman belted his eleventh home run of the season off of Cardinals' starter Scott Gorgen to make it 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Gorgen (3-5) earned the win working seven innings seven hits and two runs, while striking out six.
The Cardinals' (35-32) offense answered back nearly immediately against the Naturals' Elisaul Pimentel in the bottom of the second inning. After three straight Cardinals reached base to start the inning Travis Tartamella delivered a two-run double to tie the game. Kolten Wong blasted a two-run home run his seventh of the season to put the Cardinals on top 5-2.
Jake Shaffer and Xavier Scruggs each delivered RBI singles to push the lead to 7-2. Pimentel (2-5) went five innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out three. Brendan Lafferty worked three scoreless innings for the Naturals.
The same two teams will wrap-up their four-game series tomorrow night at 6:08 PM. The Naturals will send left-hander Chris Dwyer (3-6, 6.26) against the Cardinals right-hander Seth Maness (3-0, 1.56). The game can be heard on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
