Springfield Cardinals News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - With each team winning a game in the series, the rubber match of the three-game set against Corpus Christi featured two stand-out prospects on the mound.

For Springfield, #1 prospect, according to Baseball America, Shelby Miller made his much anticipated Double-A debut against the #17 prospect, and former third round pick, of the Astros Ross Seaton.

In the top of the first inning, the Cardinals would give a lead to their 20-year-old starter as Matt Adams blasted a two-out solo homer, his 15th of the season, to put Springfield in front 1-0.

Shelby Miller took the mound in the bottom of the inning and struck out the first batter he faced to set the tone. He would go on to retire the side in order. In the 2nd, Miller ran into a little trouble as JD Martines led off with a single and moved to second on an error by right field Alex Castellanos. After a groundout to short, Jacob Goebbert singled to centerfield to score Martinez to even the score 1-1.

The game stayed tied until the 5th when the Cardinals loaded the bases on two singles and walk before Steven Hill drove home Jermaine Curtis with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game.

Springfield tacked on another insurance run in the 6th when Ryan Jackson singled with two outs and Shelby Miller cemented an outstanding outing on the mound with an RBI double to right field to bring the Cardinals lead to 3-1.

In his Double-A debut, Shelby Miller would last six innings allowing just one run on seven hits, all singles, while walking two and striking out five. Jose Rada would pitch two flawless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Cardinals in front by two runs. Nick Greenwood came in for the 9th and retired the first two batters he faced before Sam Freeman entered and allowed a two-out single. Jimmy VanOstrand then flied out to the wall in left field to end the game to earn Freeman his 2nd save of the season and Shelby Miller his first win in the Texas League.

The Cardinals will begin a three-game series Saturday night against San Antonio at Wolff Stadium at 7:05pm. Springfield will send David Kopp to the mound against right handed Padres prospect Casey Kelly of the Missions.

Springfield will return to Hammons Field Wednesday, June 8 for a quick four-game series against the Tulsa Drillers at 7:07pm. Great tickets are still available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
