The Cardinals took the Hooks to the woodshed last night, 9-1. Michael Blazek allowed just one run through seven innings to pick up his sixth win this season. He matched his season high with eight strikeouts. Eric Duncan's three-run home run in the sixth blew the game open, giving the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Tommy Pham and Matt Adams each added two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who pulled to within three games of first-place Tulsa in the Texas League North first-half standings.
Jacob Goebbert had a 3-for-4 night with Corpus Christi's lone RBI. Goebbert has hit safely in four straight. J.D. Martinez was the only other Hook to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. The Hooks have dropped seven of their last nine, while the Cardinals have won seven of their last 10.

RHP Shelby Miller (2-3, 2.89 w/Palm Beach) vs. RHP Ross Seaton (2-2, 5.15)
Miller, a first-round pick (19th overall) of the Cardinals in 2009 out of Brownwood (TX) High School, makes his Double-A debut here tonight in his home state. Miller was promoted to Springfield from Advanced-A Palm Beach of the Florida State League, where in nine starts he was 2-3 with a 2.89 ERA, with 81 strikeouts in 53.0 innings. Miller exits the FSL as the league leader in strikeouts and SO/9 IP ratio (13.75) for starting pitchers. He also ranks second in the circuit among starters in batting average against (.204). In his last five starts with Palm Beach, Miller was 2-1 with a 2.32 ERA, holding opponents to two or fewer runs in each outing. Miller was honored as the Cardinals 2010 Minor League Pitcher of the Year for his efforts with Quad Cities in the Midwest League, where in 24 starts he went 7-5 with a 3.62 ERA, with 140 strikeouts in 104.1 innings.

Seaton, a third-round selection of the Astros in the 2008 draft out of Second Baptist High School in Houston, makes his 11th start this year and his first against the Cardinals. Last Saturday at Arkansas, Seaton held the Travelers to three unearned runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He did not figure in the decision, as Arkansas rallied for a 5-4 win in 10 innings. Seaton has put together back-to-back quality starts, going 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his last two outings. Saturday's performance was his fifth quality start this season. The right-hander spent all of last year with Lancaster in the California League, where he tied for the league lead in starts (28) and was Lancaster's leader in innings pitched (146.1).

Astros announce May players
The Houston Astros Player Development Department has announced its players of the month for May for each of its four full-season affiliates. Here in Corpus Christi, the honors go to LHP Xavier Cedeno, 1B Jimmy VanOstrand and infielder Brandon Wikoff.
In five May starts, Cedeno went 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA, with 30 strikeouts in 33.2 innings. He held the opposition to a .211 batting average (26 hits). For the year, Cedeno has been tough on left-handed hitters, holding them to a .239 average and posting 25 strikeouts in 67 at-bats.
VanOstrand was tabbed as the offensive player of the month. In 27 May games, VanOstrand batted .310 (31x100) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 11 runs and 12 RBIs. He also drew 14 walks to post an OBP of .393 and an .833 OPS.
Wikoff was selected as the club's defensive player of the month. In 17 games split between 2B (4), SS (6) and 3B (7), Wikoff posted 15 put-outs, 48 assists and 1 error for a fielding percentage of .984. For the year, Wikoff has 28 put-outs, 75 assists and 2 errors to check in with a .981 fielding percentage. He has also been a part of nine double plays.
Uncle Fester part 2
Springfield first baseman Matt Adams has Corpus Christi's number. Period. With a 2-for-4 effort last night that included two RBIs, Adams is now 11-for-15 (.733) against Hooks pitching this year with 3 doubles, 1 HR and 5 RBIs.
Adams currently ranks third in the league in hitting (.348). He is tied for the league lead in HRs (14) and RBIs (46). He is also the TL leader in slugging percentage (.668).
No soup for you
And for our purposes here, soup means extra bases. Corpus Christi cleanup hitter J.D. Martinez continues to get his hits. In 11 games since his return from the disabled list, Martinez is batting .313 (10x32) with 8 walks and 2 RBIs. All 10 of those hits have been singles. In fact, J.D.'s last 13 hits have been singles.
J.D.'s last extra-base hit was his grand slam home run May 2 vs. Frisco. His last double was the day before (May 1), also against the RoughRiders.

With all due respect to Sergeant Hulka of "Stripes" fame, we impart the following statistic. Last night's result marked the ninth time this season the Hooks have been beaten by 7 or more runs.
