Springfield Cardinals News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Springfield Cardinals (11-12, 41-52) outhit the Arkansas Travelers (15-8, 58-33) on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 7,164 at Hammons Field in a 5-1 loss after winning the first two games of the four-game series on Thursday and Friday.
DECISIONS:
W: LHP Ricardo Sanchez (6-5)
L: LHP Evan Kruczynski (2-5)
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- Travelers SS Donnie Walton broke a 1-1 tie with two-out two-run home run off RHP Ronnie Williams in the seventh inning. The homer came immediately after it appeared the Cardinals had caught LF Logan Taylor stealing to end the inning, but he was instead called safe.
- Arkansas C Brennon Kaleiwahea gave the visitors a four-run cushion with a two-run home run of his own in the top of the ninth.
- As has been the case all season, the Cardinals threatened late, putting a pair of runners on in the ninth inning but this time failing to find the same comeback magic they found last night in a 9-7 11th-inning walk-off win.
NOTABLES:
- Kruczynski posted a strong outing, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over 7.0 innings, striking out four.
- 3B Yariel Gonzalez homered for the second night in a row after smacking the dramatic walk-off home run on Friday. Tonight's homer came in the second inning and gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
- Walton led all batters with a 3-for-5 night at the plate for Arkansas.
WHAT'S ON DECK:
The Cardinals look to win their fifth consecutive home series on Sunday as they close out the four-game set against the first-place Travelers at 6:10 p.m. with gates opening at 5:10 p.m.
Sunday is our Foundation Credit Union Salt & Pepper Jersey Shakers Giveaway for 2,000 fans. It's also a Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday and Kids Run the Bases, which means free ice cream sandwiches for kids before the game at Gate 3 and the chance to run the bases after.
