Captains, Power Trade Shutouts

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH)-- Four Captains pitchers combined on a one-hit shuout in the second game of a doubleheader Monday as the Captains defeated the West Virginia Power 3-0 to gain a split of the twinbill at Classic Park.

Lake County (10-7) came within two outs of the first no-hitter in franchise history, but Grant Richardson's single to left off Kieran Mattison derailed the no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning. Mattison recovered to retire the nex two hitters to complete the one-hitter and pick up his second save.

Tony Sipp started and went the first two innings. Adrian Schau (1-1) followed with three scoreless, hitless innings to earn the win. Lefty Michael Hernandez tossed one hitless frame before giving way to Mattison.

Chad Longworth gave the Captains a first-inning lead with a two-run single off Greg Kloosterman (0-4).

In the first game, West Virginia's Hernan Iribarren slapped an RBI single to right in the top of the 10th inning on Monday, helping the West Virginia Power to a 1-0 win over the Captains.

Iribarren's hit off Kyle Collins drove home pinch runner Freddy Parejo to snap a scoreless tie. The run was charged to Scott Roehl (0-2), who walked two in the inning.

It was the first shutout loss of the year for the Captains. Four West Virginia pitchers combined on a four-hitter. Josh Wahpepah started and worked the first five innings, allowing just one hit. Mark Rogers chipped in 2 1/3 innings. Robert Hinton (1-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 innings, and Simon Beresford picked up his first save. It was the first road win of the season for West Virginia, which also snapped a four-game losing streak.

On the Captains side, starter Justin Hoyman tossed seven shutout innings, scattering three hits. It was the second time this season that Hoyman has thrown seven scoreless innings in a game, only to emerge with a no-decision.

The Captains will welcome in the Hagerstown Suns for the start of a four-game series on Tuesday evening at 6:35 (WELW AM 1330).
