South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - Brad Farynuk had a hattrick as the South Carolina Stingrays cruised to an 8-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers in game five of their best-of-seven game series; the Rays now lead 3-2 in the series.

"The team really played well tonight," said Assistant Coach Cail MacLean. "Our power play did a great job of moving the puck and finding openings for opportunities."

In what was a back and forth first period, the Rays ended up on the better side of a 4-2 score. They cracked the board first on a goal by Jeff Corey at 3:40, his first goal of the post season. The goal came off a pass from behind the net from Trent Campbell with the other assist going to Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Less than four minutes later, Chris Capraro tipped in a shot past Jonathan Boutin to tie the game up at one. With the Rays on their second power play of the game, Zach Tarkir netted his first goal of the playoffs at 11:29. The goal was assisted by Travis Morin and Brad Farynuk. Spencer Carbery made it a two goal game with his second goal of the playoffs after playing an errant puck off the back boards past Maxime Daigneault. Marty Guerin kept it close as he made it a 3-2 game with his third goal of the playoffs. The Rays continued to pressure with the period winding down as Brad Farynuk chipped in with his first playoff goal this season. While on their third power play of the night, Farynuk snuck towards the crease and tipped in a pass from Morin to make it a 4-2 game. The goal came at 19:02 of the period and was assisted by Morin and Maxime Lacroix.

The Rays stretched their lead in the second period as Keith Johnson got his second playoff goal to make it a 5-2 lead at 11:06 of the period. Johnson back handed the puck over the pad of new goaltender Jeff Jakaitis who came in to spell Daigneault after the first period of play. The power play goal by Johnson was assisted by Scott Romfo and Tarkir. At 17:08 of the period, Morin stole the puck from behind the net and found Trent Campbell all alone in the far side circle. Campbell, rather than take the shot, fed a pass to Morin who back handed the puck into a wide open net to make it a 6-2 game after two periods. The goal was Morin's third of the playoffs.

After a lengthy delay to fix up the ice, the third period got underway with both teams playing a little sluggish. At 4:46 of the period, the Checkers tried to cut into the lead with a goal by Michele Leveille, his second goal of the series to make it a 6-3 game. The Rays, and specifically Farynuk, were not done however. At 9:21 of the period, Farynuk scored on a back door play while on the power play, much like his first goal, from Campbell and Tarkir. At 13:46, the Captain of the Rays did it again, on another back door power play goal. The assists on goal went to Morin and Johann Kroll and made it an 8-3 score, the eventual final.

The winning goaltender was Boutin who stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Daigneault who stopped six of the ten shots he faced in 20:00 minutes of play. Jakaitis stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced in 40:00 minutes of play, but did not factor in the decision. The Rays went 5-10 on the power play while Charlotte went 1-2 on the man advantage.

The Rays will be back in action on Sunday as they travel back to Charlotte to play game six at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, NC. Game time will be at 7:00 and you can catch all the action by tuning in to ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 6:50.
