Checkers season on brink after game five defeat by Stingrays

Charleston S.C.- A most important game five in a tied series was commanded beginning to end by the South Carolina Stingrays who struck for eight goals against the Checkers in their victory. With the win, the Checkers season is now one loss away from being over as they will try to stave off elimination on Sunday back at The Extreme Ice Center.
The Stingrays got on the board first when forward Jeff Corey blasted a shot from the slot that beat Maxime Daigneault off the right post and into the net at 3:40. The Checkers tied the contest on the power-play when Chris Capraro deflected a point shot by Steve Ward past Jonathan Boutin at 7:09. South Carolina took the lead a second time off a Zack Tarkir power-play one-timer at 11:29 and then they went ahead 3-1 when Spencer Carbery wristed a shot low on the glove side of Daigneault at 14:23. Charlotte came back to cut the lead in half on a nice cross ice pass by Matthew Ford that was slammed into the net by Marty Guerin at 15:44. Another defensive lapse by Charlotte resulted in a Brad Farynuk goal when a good passing play from Travis Morin and Maxime Lacroix setup an easy tap in at 19:02. With six goals registered through twenty minutes, the Stingrays held a 4-2 lead. Jeff Jakaitis would relieve Daigneault at the beginning of the second period.
During the second period, the Stingrays extended their lead using another power-play goal to do it. Keith Johnson fired a rebound past Jakaitis at 11:06 putting the Stingrays up 5-2. South Carolina added another goal on a giveaway inside the Checkers zone. Trent Campbell intercepted an outlet pass and passed the puck to an open Travis Morin who made no mistake with a gaping net at 17:08.
Despite a third period goal by Checkers forward Michel Leveille at 4:46 bringing the Checkers to within three, the Stingrays scored two more goals to end the contest and win the game. Two more goals scored by Farynuk at 9:21 and 13:46 gave him a hat-trick and plenty to celebrate as his team is one game away from moving on in the tournament.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL.
