West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
Beloit, WI- The West Michigan Whitecaps can finally come home. The Whitecaps concluded their longest road trip of the season on Monday by splitting a doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers in Wisconsin - dropping the first game, 4-3, before winning the second game, 7-2. The Whitecaps finish the 12-day road trip with a 4-7 record.
In game one, the Whitecaps trailed 3-1 and were down to their final out when an infield single by Juan Francia and a throwing error on the same play allowed the tying runs to score. The Snappers then won it in the eighth on two singles and a bounce out in a game that was delayed three times by rain.
Then in game two, the 'Caps came out swinging with two runs in the first and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Vince Blue's two-run double in the sixth and Kurt Piantek's homer in the seventh concluded the 'Caps scoring. Starting pitcher Chris Steinborn was outstanding as he threw the first complete game victory of the season. Steinborn limited Beloit to just five hits with a late two-run homer costing him his shutout.
'Caps infielder Francia hit safely in both games to extend his personal hitting streak to 14 games, the longest streak of the season for West Michigan this season.
The Whitecaps now return home for 16 of the final 20 games in the first half starting with a four game series with the Fort Wayne Wizards. The 'Caps and Wizards will meet on Tuesday night at 7:00 at Fifth Third Ballpark and then will follow that game with an 11 AM School Days game on Wednesday.
