Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols fall for just the fourth time this season in regulation after tonight's 4-2 defeat to Youngstown. The Caps fell behind 3-0 in the 2nd period and were unable to net the equalizer in tonight's contest.
"I thought we waited too long to get to our game and to get to our identity," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said. "Youngstown played a very solid 60 minute game and I thought we weren't consistent throughout most of the night and then by the time we tried to push and get to our game, it was a little bit too late"
"When you're chasing a 3-0 lead, it's hard to come back and we've had games where we have come back but tonight it nipped us in the bud and we learned a hard lesson."
With 4:36 left in the 2nd period while on the power play, Capitols forward Tyler Haskins took a gorgeous down low pass from Kyle Kukkonen and buried his fifth goal of the season to pull the Capitols within two of the Phantoms. Madison blueliner Ben Dexheimer was credited with his 9th helper of the season. Continuing their strong special teams effort tonight, it was Capitols forward Nick DeSantis' turn to put one home on the power play. Tyler Haskins and Luke Mittelstadt found their way on the scoresheet assisting on DeSantis' seventh goal of the season.
The Capitols entered the evening with the 3rd ranked power play and are now tied for 2nd best in the USHL.
"Corey Leivermann and Gaven Bickford do a hell of a job with the power," Upton said. "The guys that are on those units have really committed to learning what we're trying to do."
The Capitols will look to bounce back tomorrow night when they hit the road to take on the league leading Chicago Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The last time the two power-houses met, the Caps used some Madison Magic and stunned the Steel coming from behind to win in overtime at Capitol Ice. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m.
