
Braccini, Larson Score a Pair, Lumberjacks Sweep Dubuque in 6-3 Win

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Muskegon Lumberjacks swept their first opponent of the 2021-22 season by defeating the Dubuque Fighting Saints by a final score of 6-to-3 from Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday, Nov. 20. Jake Braccini and Joey Larson each netted a pair of goals for the Jacks, while Ben Strinden and Ethan Whitcomb lit the lamp for Muskegon in Saturday's effort. This marks the first time the Lumberjacks have swept the Saints in the regular season since December 10-11, 2020, when Muskegon took both games in a road sweep.
1st Period
The Saints found the back of the net first, this time from Nikita Borodayenko at 7:22 of the first period. Borodayenko's third goal of the season was assisted by Max Montes to give Dubuque a 1-to-0 lead.
Just 60 seconds later, Muskegon's Ben Strinden responded to tie the game 1-to-1 at 8:22 of the first period. Strinden's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Quinn Hutson and Joey Larson.
At 16:16, Ethan Whitcomb scored his second career USHL to give the Lumberjacks a 2-to-1 lead. Whitcomb's goal was assisted by Jake Braccini.
Just over a minutes later, Joey Larson extended the Lumberjack lead to 3-to-1 at 17:18 of the first period. Larson's team-leading ninth goal of the season was assisted by Quinn Hutson to put Muskegon up by a pair.
With nine seconds left in the opening period, the Saints pulled within one goal, courtesy of Kenny Connors at 19:51 of the period. Tristan Lemyre and William Hallén picked up assists to make it a 3-to-2 lead for the Jacks.
After 20 minutes of play, Muskegon carried a 3-to-2 lead into the first intermission.
2nd Period
The Jacks would go up by a deuce again, this time from a goal by Jake Braccini three minutes into the second period. Braccini's goal was assisted by David Hymovitch and Ethan Whitcomb to give Muskegon a 4-to-2 advantage.
At 7:01 of the middle period, Dubuque's Ryan Beck cut the deficit to one with his fourth goal of the season. Beck's goal was assisted by Connor Kurth to make it a 4-to-3 score, still in favor of Muskegon.
Jake Braccini netted his second goal of the game at 15:19 of the second period to put the Lumberjacks back up by two goals. Braccini's goal was unassisted to move the score to 5-to-3 Lumberjacks.
After 40 minutes, the Lumberjacks controlled a 5-to-3 lead into the intermission.
3rd Period
Joey Larson continued his impressive weekend as he struck the back of the net again at 4:03 of the third period while on the power play. Larson's 10th goal of the season was assisted by David Hymovitch and Tyler Hotson to double up the Saints by a score of 6-to-3.
In the end, the Lumberjacks took out the broomsticks for the first time this season as they swept the Dubuque Fighting Saints by a final score of 6-to-3.
On Deck
The Muskegon Lumberjacks will have a short turnaround next week as they head to Plymouth for a single-game matchup against Team USA U17 on Wednesday, Nov. 24 with puck drop at 3:00 pm EST. After the holiday, the Lumberjacks will return home to open up a two-game weekend series against the Madison Capitols on Friday and Saturday, November 26 and 27, respectively. Puck drop is slated for 7:10 pm EST both nights from Mercy Health Arena in downtown Muskegon.
