Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols welcomed twelve new players via trade and through Phase 1 of the USHL Draft on Monday night.
All players selected in Phase 1 are from the 1998 birth year. Phase 1 picks are traditionally players who may not be ready for USHL play in 2014-15, but will continue to develop at lower levels in preparation for playing with the team that drafts them in future years.
The Capitols selected Long Island Gulls (AYHL) defenseman Simon Butala with their first ever draft pick at eighth overall in round one.
In addition to Butala, Madison also chose two other Gulls: center Evan Wisocky and defenseman Brendan Less.
The Capitols drafted their first goaltender in the third round, selecting Shattuck St. Mary's goaltender Ryan Edquist.
In addition, the Capitols selected Chicago Mission defenseman Ryan Carlson, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite's right wing Connor Ford, New Jersey Devils Youth left wing Augie Burkhardt, Philadelphia Junior Flyers' center Joey Kubachka, and Chicago Fury forward Travis Schneider.
Capitols head coach & general manager Steve Miller, along with associate coach and assistant general manager Keith Paulsen, pieced together the Capitols draftees, who will be a part of Capitols training camp this June.
"Keith talked to every kid we scouted and I couldn't be happier for the work he has put into the program," said Capitols head coach Steve Miller. "We're both very excited to see these future Capitols at main camp in June."
The Capitols also added two players with AAA Madison Capitols ties. They selected current AAA Capitol defenseman Cole Hults with their final selection of Phase 1.
Additionally, the Capitols acquired Oregon, Wis. native Alec Vanko from the Chicago Steel via trade. The defenseman tallied 25 points with the Steel this season in the USHL. Prior to the Steel, Vanko played for both the Janesville Jets in the NAHL and the AAA Capitols.
In one other trade, the Capitols acquired 18-year-old forward Matt Jones from the Sioux City Musketeers. Jones was originally a selection of Sioux City in the 2013 USHL Draft.
The Capitols will continue to build their roster Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. in Phase 2 of the USHL Draft. Fans can follow their draft progress on the team's Twitter, @MadCapsHockey. The media is also invited to attend a post-draft session inside the Alliant Energy Center beginning at 3 p.m.
