Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols net five goals in the final 40 minutes to take down the Youngstown Phantoms 5-1 in tonight's series opener.
"I thought that we weren't at our best for the first 40 minutes," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said. "Simon did a great job of holding on for us when we has some breakdowns. I'm very proud of the guys in the third for the last 20 coming out and they really showed the ability to be a top notch team."
Winger Nick DeSantis got things rolling for the Capitols tonight burying his first goal of season, 3:22 into the 2nd period. DeSantis scored after getting a stick on a Cade Penney pass from the right circle. Blueliner Nick Wallace also registered his first point of the season nabbing the secondary assist. Just after the halfway point of the 2nd period, Matthew McGroarty put a loose puck home to make it 2-0 Capitols. McGroarty's first goal of his United States Hockey League career was assisted by Wallace and Caps forward Jared Mangan.
Taking a 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of regulation, the Capitols would be shorthanded for the first 3:52 of the frame after a Blake Dangos high-sticking double minor. After killing off the double minor, Youngstown finally beat Madison goaltender, Simon Latkoczy. The native of Slovakia turned aside 36 of the 37 shots he faced tonight.
The Capitols scored three goals in 5:58 in the latter half of the 3rd period to bury the Phantoms. Madison captain Jack Horbach netted a shorthanded beauty, his first of the season, after receiving a saucer pass from line mate, Reid Pabich. Two and a half minutes later, Pabich assisted on another Capitols goal. This time it is was Jack Musa putting a backhand shot in the Youngstown net. Putting the nail in the coffin 3:20 later was Blake Dangos. Dangos took a drop pass from Cade Penney after he skated circles around the Phantom zone. Massachusetts commit, Nathan Lewis was credited with the secondary assist, his first point of the season.
We'll do it all over again tomorrow night when the Capitols and Phantoms battle it out in the series finale at 7:05 p.m. at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
