August 5, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME â The Washington Capitals promoted Brian MacLellan to Director of Player Personnel, Vice President and General Manager George McPhee announced today.
MacLellan, who served as a pro scout for the Capitals the past three seasons, will assist and advise McPhee in all player-related matters.
MacLellan will also oversee the club's developmental programs and work with the Capitals' professional and amateur scouts.
"Brian is an excellent judge of talent and knows what a winning team needs," McPhee said. "He played hockey at many levels, including junior, college, European, minor league and spent 10 seasons in the NHL where he played for a Stanley Cup winning team. Brian is smart, trustworthy and experienced."
"I knew this was what I wanted to do," MacLellan said. "It's a great opportunity and an opportunity to work with someone I know and like and trust. [Taking the job] was more of a no-brainer than anything else."
In addition to his responsibilities in Washington, he will also serve as the General Manager of the Capitals' minor-league team, the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates.
"Brian has been around the game for many years as a player and within the scouting realm. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the organization, particularly to us here in Portland. It's a real positive for Washington and here in Portland because we are gaining the experience of a very good hockey man," said Pirates Head Coach Tim Army.
During MacLellan's NHL career he skated for the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, Calgary Flames - where he won a Stanley Cup in 1989 - and Detroit Red Wings.
The Guelph, Ontario, native played hockey for Bowling Green State University from 1978-82. MacLellan received his MBA from the University of Minnesota in 1995 and went on to work for an investment consulting firm in Minneapolis before joining the Capitals as a pro scout.
The Pirates home opener is scheduled for Saturday, October 16, 2004, Hockey Night in Portland, at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
