Brockton, Mass. - Brockton starter Freddy Flores was brilliant, throwing a complete-game one-hitter against the league's top club, as the Rox silenced the Quebec Capitales, 3-1, in a Can-Am League tilt on Monday evening at Campanelli Stadium. The win brought Brockton within half a game of the Capitales for first place in the second half.

The Rox (24-16 second half, 51-36 overall) tallied their first run of the game in the third, on 3B Phillip Cuadrado's leadoff solo home run. Brockton then doubled its lead the following inning with 1B Melvin Falu's league-leading 20th home run of the season, and made the score 3-0 in the fifth, when SS Dominic Ramos singled, stole second, and scored on CF Chris Valencia's RBI single.

Flores was perfect through five and one-third innings, until Capitales C Marc Mimeault blasted a home run into the right-field picnic area. It was one of only two baserunners he allowed all evening, also hitting Mimeault with a pitch in the ninth. Flores struck out seven hitters on the night, and threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 29 batters during the game.

The righthander is now the third pitcher on the Rox staff this season with 10 wins, joining Mike Smith and Mike Wlodarczyk, and just the seventh in Brockton history to reach the ten-victory plateau. Flores has allowed just five runs and two walks in his last 35 innings pitched, going 5-0 during the span. His 3.32 ERA now puts him fourth in the league.

The third spot in Can-Am League ERA belongs to Monday's starter for Quebec (25-16, 55-33), Karl Gelinas (4-2), who took the loss, giving up three runs on nine hits in eight innings of work, striking out five.

Valencia led the Rox offense, going 3-for-4, while Falu and Ramos each had a pair of hits.

The two teams meet in the second game of the series on Tuesday night, with Brockton's Wayne Lundgren (7-6) facing the Capitales' Dan Sausville (7-5) at 6:05 p.m.
