Canton Charge Fall in Opener
November 25, 2011 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
On Friday night, the Charge brought NBADL action to the city of Canton. Unfortunately, Iowa's team bus brought the reigning Champs to the city of Canton.
Playing in their inaugural game, the Charge gave the Energy all they could handle in the first stanza, led by top pick Tyrell Biggs' 14 first-half points. But Canton couldn't overcome Iowa's size in the second half and dropped the franchise's home opener, 100-82, on Friday night at the Canton Civic Center.
The Charge trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, but Jonathan Blake's putback with 7:37 remaining in the second period brought them to within a single point, 33-32. The Energy went into the locker ahead, 54-50.
The second half was all Iowa - which came out of intermission with a 9-0 run and extended its lead to a dozen, 80-68, by the end of the third. In the fourth, Iowa pushed its edge to as many as 22 points before emptying its bench late in regulation.
All five Energy starters tallied double-figures, but the squad was led by Stanley Robinson's 18 points off the bench. Jarrid Famous doubled-up with 12 points and 10 board and Brandon Ewing led both teams with six helpers.
Canton's Travis Franklin led all scorers with 25 points - going 7-of-11 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the stripe - and led the Charge with eight boards. Canton native, Keith McLeod, finished with 19 points in the loss.
Iowa used its size advantage to dominate Canton on the boards, 51-29. The Energy shot 50 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from long distance. The Charge shot just 38 percent from the floor, just six percent (1-17) from beyond the arc.
The Charge welcome Texas to Canton next Friday. The Energy travel to Sioux Falls for a Saturday night matchup with the Skyforce.
