Cleveland Charge News Release
Less than 19 hours after both teams met in Canton the previous night, the Charge topped the Iowa Energy, 93-84, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Sunday evening. The win improved Canton to 13-9 and gives them a 2-1 edge in the season series between the two teams, while Iowa dropped to 6-12.
Iowa jumped out to a 24-20 lead in the first quarter with an efficient offensive attack, hitting 10-of-19 shots from the field for 53%. Canton changed the pace with a 16-7 run over the final 4:14 of the first half to take a 50-46 lead at the intermission. The Charge scored 30 points in the second quarter, including 11 from Dominique Johnson, on 63% overall shooting from the floor.
The Charge would never trail throughout the entire second half and led by as many as 16 at one point. Canton's defense locked down in the third quarter, allowing just 15 points by the Energy on 6-of-18 shooting. The Charge also capitalized on many of their high-percentage scoring opportunities with 30 of their 43 second half points coming in the paint.
On the heels of one of his best performances of the season last night, Micheal Eric exceeded his season-best points total for the second night in a row, notching his sixth double-double of the year with 23 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in 34 minutes. Johnson finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 29 minutes off the bench. Jorge Gutierrez contributed 13 points with five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 34 minutes. JaJuan Johnson, eighth in the D-League in blocks with 1.9 per game, swatted four shots with two points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes. Antoine Agudio and Kyle Gibson each added 11 points for the Charge.
Iowa was led by Paul Harris' 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in 25 minutes of relief off the bench. It was Harris' second double-double in as many nights off the bench against Canton. Chris Wright scored 16 points with eight assists and two blocks in 35 minutes. Morris Almond poured in 16 points with four rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes. Terrence Jennings had 11 points, five rebounds and three blocks in just 19 minutes.
Canton will next return home for a back-to-back set with the Springfield Armor on January 19th & 20th at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Civic Center. Friday night will feature $1 hot dogs presented by Sugardale and postgame free throws for any fan 18-and-under.
