
Canseco Homers & Strikes out Two in Loss to Vipers

Collecting 23 hits the Calgary Vipers (20-14) defeated Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions (10-21) 16-2 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The game started off on a sour note for the Vipers as Canseco hit his first home run of the season in the first inning but after that it was all Snakes with 16 unanswered tallies. Canseco finished two-for-four at the plate and later came in to pitch the final two innings and record two strikeouts while giving up three runs. Offensively Calgary scored in seven of eight innings at-bat including four three-run frames while every hitter collected at least a hit, a run, and a run batted in.
On the mound Mark Michael (2-2) got the win after six innings and allowing the two runs. Out of the bullpen Scott Watson, J.J. Whetsel, and Dan Morari all tossed scoreless innings while Jon Huizinga (1-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs in three and a third innings.
Yuma took the lead in the top of the first inning when Joey Gathright drag bunted for a base hit and Jose Canseco lined his first home run of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the first as Jonny Kaplan doubled, Aaron Dunsmore singled, Wilver Perez dropped in a run batted in base hit, Drew Miller collected a sacrifice fly, and Justin Tellam singled in one for a 3-2 lead.
The Vipers put up another three-run frame in the second when Kaplan singled, stole second base, scored on consecutive throwing errors, Dunsmore singled, Perez was hit by a pitch, and Tellam doubled home two for a 6-2 advantage.
Calgary again scored thrice in the fourth as Miller was hit by a pitch, Tellam walked, Louie Templeton and Rohan both singled in a run, and Jeff Giacomini collected a sacrifice fly for a 9-2 lead.
Another run was added in the fifth by the Snakes for a 10-2 advantage as Kaplan doubled and scored on a Perez RBI single.
For a fourth time the Vipers scored three runs in an inning in the sixth when Rohan doubled, Giacomini singled, Bryan Burke drove in one with a base hit, and Dunsmore doubled home two for a 13-2 score.
The scoring continued in the seventh as Calgary's Tellam doubled, Templeton and Rohan walked to load the bases, Giacomini singled in one, and Kaplan drove in one with a fielder's choice for a 15-2 lead.
In the eighth frame the Snakes made it 16-2 when Miller singled, Tellam doubled, and Templeton cashed a run with a base hit.
This five game series against Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions continues on Thursday June 30th at 7:30 for FIREWORKS, on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
