Caps Survive Scare to Beat Maui 9-7

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals survived a late-inning scare to hold on and defeat Maui Na Koa Ikaika 9-7 on Tuesday at TELUS Field in the opening contest of the five-game 2011 Canada Day Series presented by Mott's.

The Caps held a commanding 9-1 lead on Maui through four innings, but the visiting team battled back and cut the deficit to just two runs in the top the ninth before Edmonton shut the door for good. The Caps improved their record to 19-12 on the North American League season and closed to within one game of the Lake County Fielders for first place in the North Division.

Reigning NAL player of the week, Caps left fielder Todd Linden, continued his hot play by crushing a two-run home run and also scoring two runs on the night. Shortstop Enrique Cruz was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while centre fielder Steve Brown and second baseman Matt Rogelstad each had two hits, one RBI and a run scored.

The Caps got a solid outing from starting pitcher Alexander Francisco, who tossed seven innings and gave up three runs on six Maui hits while striking out an impressive 11 opposing batters. David Davidson and Chad Blackwell combined to allow four runs to make the game close, but Bartolome Fortunato came on in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Tuesday's game was the Canada Day Series opener, as the Caps and Maui clash every night through Saturday at 7 p.m. Presenting sponsor Mott's is featuring $3 Caesars all series, while fans on Tuesday enjoyed another $2 Tuesday presented by CISN FM, as ice cream, fries, nachos, slushies and pizza by the slice were just $2.

Game two is another edition of Wiener Wednesday presented by K-97, with those mouth-water Capitals hot dogs just $2 all night. The marquee game of the series is Friday's Canada Day game, as fans can celebrate the holiday at the ballpark and enjoy the river valley fireworks from the best seats in Edmonton.
