Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager Roy Stasiuk announced the details this morning of a four player deal with the Prince Albert Raiders. The Canes acquired 20 year old defenseman Jeff May in exchange for prospects Brent Martin, Robbie Ciolfi and Lethbridge's 2nd round pick in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.
The 6'2" 196 pound May is a 2005 draft pick (5th round, 151st overall) of the Detroit Red Wings. A native of Richmond, British Columbia, May had a strong 2006-2007 for the Raiders tallying 44 points (10G, 34A) and 96 PIMs in 72 games. He also brings with him playoff experience with 25 WHL playoff games under his belt and eight points (2G, 6A) He leads all Prince Albert defenseman in scoring this season, with 20 points (1G, 19A).
"Jeff May is a strong fundamental WHL defenseman with veteran awareness and experience" said Stasiuk "He skates well, plays the body and is a consistent playmaker, all attributes which we know will help him add depth to our lineup."
The move for a potential 'Top 4' defenseman ends the speculation caused by injuries to Hurricanes D-man Paul MacDonald and overage forward Luke Wiens.
"We knew we had some needs to address due to injury, however we felt comfortable moving forward with our team as it was." said Stasiuk adding "This was simply an opportunity to add a quality player while not losing anyone from our current lineup."
Though May is currently resting an injury he is expected to arrive in Lethbridge and be prepared to play as early as Friday's game against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
R 20;Jeff May has been a great Raider the past 4 and a half seasons and we wanted to give him the opportunity to showcase his talents," commented Raider General Manager Donn Clark. "We think Jeff will fit in very well with Lethbridge as they have a very skilled group of forwards. The Raiders want to thank Jeff for his contributions to our organization and wish him the best."
