Candelario's Blast Lifts Hawks

BOISE, Idaho - Jeimer Candelario crushed a one-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Boise Hawks to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Yakima Bears at Memorial Stadium.

Candelario unloaded on a 1-0 fastball by Blake Forslund setting off pandamonium at the park - the Hawks third win of the season in their final at bat.

Boise trailed 5-3 heading into the eighth, but loaded the bases with no outs. An Xavier Batista bases loaded walk got the Hawks within a run, with Marco Hernandez singling home Willson Contreras with the tying run - with Mike Lang throwing out Rock Shoulders at the plate to end the inning.

Yakima took an early 1-0 lead in the second on a Ronnie Freeman RBI single, but two-out RBI singles by Shoulders and Batista gave Boise the lead in the fourth. The Bears came right back, as Wagner Mateo singled home the tying run in the fifth, with Kevin Medrano scoring the go-ahead run on a throwing error after stealing third.

The Hawks would even the score in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Carlos Escobar, but Mateo came up big in the seventh, doubling home a pair to give Yakima the lead.

Eddie Orozco got the win for the Hawks, throwing two shutout innings. Bijan Rademacher went 3-for-4 with three doubles, Stephen Bruno added a 3-for-5 night, with Hernandez adding two hits.

Blake Perry got a no-decision for Yakima, going five innings of two-run, seven-hit ball, striking out four. Lang and Mateo each went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with James Pugliese meeting Kyle Owings at 7:15 p.m.

NOTES - The walk-off homer was the fifth walk-off win for Boise at Memorial Stadium against Yakima in their last seven meetings - including a walk-off homer by Paul Hoilman on July 4, 2011...Bruno and Herandez extended their hit streaks to six games with their multi-hit games, while Trey Martin went 0-for-5, seeing his six-game streak ended...Medrano extended his hit streak to 10 games for the Bears...Rademacher's three doubles was the first three-double game by a Hawk single Wes Darvill had three two-baggers at Yakima on August 21 of last season...the Hawks had a pair of additions to their roster - as left-handed pitchers Hunter Ackerman and Matt Iannazzo joined the team from Mesa, with Iannazzo seeing his first game action tonight, allowing two unearned runs in two innings...second-baseman Gioskar Amaya and outfielder Dong-Yub Kim are both day-to-day after being plunked in the head by pitches during the Vancouver series.
