Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Matt Newman hit a pair of home runs and drove in three, helping the Vancouver Canadians defeat the Boise Hawks, 5-4, at Memorial Stadium.
Newman launched a two-run homer in the second inning to give the C's a 3-0 lead, then tied the game in the sixth inning with a long solo blast.
Vancouver would take the lead for good in the seventh as Jorge Flores doubled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks would get the tying run on in the ninth, but Ian Kadish got Lance Rymel to line into a game-ending double play - on a stellar defensive play by Jordan Leyland at first base.
Boise rallied to take the lead in the middle innings, as RBI singles by Bijan Rademacher and Rock Shoulders in the fourth cut the Vancouver lead to 3-2, then scored two runs on a bases-loaded infield single by Jeimer Candelario, helped by a throwing error by the C's.
Kyle Anderson picked up the win for Vancouver, retiring 10 of the final 11 men he faced. Starter Taylor Cole did not allow a hit in three innings, striking out two. Flores, Newman, and Daniel Arcila each had two hits in the victory.
Felix Pena went a season-high five innings, allowing three runs and striking out a season-high five men. Willengton Cruz took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in three-plus innings of relief. Stephen Bruno had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
The homestand continues tomorrow for the Hawks, as the Yakima Bears head to town to open a three game set, as Boise sends Jose Arias to the mound, opposite Blake Perry, at 7:15 p.m.
NOTES - The two home run game by Newman was the first time the Hawks had allowed a multi-homer game by a player in just over a year, as on July 14, 2011, Vancouver's Randy Schwartz hit two homers at Nat Bailey Stadium against Boise...Cruz has taken a loss in three consecutive appearances and is tied for the league lead with four losses...Trey Martin extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the ninth inning...the Hawks fell to 2-7 this season in one-run games and blew their sixth save opportunity in 10 chances.
