Canaries take series with 5-2 win

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-19) defeated the Saint Paul Saints (17-12) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-2 to take two of three in the weekend series.

The Canaries pulled ahead in the second inning. David Hoffman and Kyle Kmiecik reached on back-to-back errors by Saints third baseman Victor Rodriguez. Jason Sugden hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Hoffman from third and give the Birds a 1-0 lead. After Dustin Delucchi singled to put runners on first and second base, Ralph Santana hit a flare into left field. Kmiecik beat the throw home to put the Canaries ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pat Scalabrini reached on an infield single. Scalabrini stole second base and advanced to third on an errant throw by David Hoffman. Scalabrini scored on a bloop single by Steve Butler to cut the Canaries lead to 2-1.

The Saints tied the game in the fifth. Jeremy Frost doubled and scored on a groundout by Billy Cox to even the game, 2-2.

The Canaries went back in front in the sixth. Hoffman singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kmiecik. Sugden followed with his second triple of the year, scoring Hoffman, and giving the Canaries a 3-2 lead. Delucchi doubled home Sugden, and after six innings the Canaries were in front a pair, 4-2.

The Birds added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Kmiecik led off with a single and scored on a groundout by Delucchi, making it 5-2.

Tony Cogan (2-0) picked up the win pitching six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits. T.J. Stanton (2-3) suffered the loss for the Saints. John Wesley picked up his sixth save of the year.

Bird Seeds: The Canaries will play a single game in Sioux City on Monday night. Sean Donlin (0-2) will get the start for the Canaries. ... The Canaries turned four double plays against the Saints on Sunday. ... The Canaries return home on Tuesday night for a "Travel Mug Giveaway" presented by Old Courthouse Museum.
