Graves' gem completes perfect homestand

June 11, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-Donovan Graves was outstanding and the Blacksnakes (12-17) won their third straight in the bottom of the ninth over Sioux City, (13-16) 2-1. Graves (2-2) tossed the first 'Snakes complete game allowing just four hits and throwing 97 pitches.

Sioux City struck first on Chris Grossman's solo home run in the third for a 1-0 lead. That was all Graves would allow the X's.

St. Joe got that right back in the home half when Cody Nowlin-who doubled to start the inning-scored on Denver Kitch's double play groundball. But that would be all Sioux City starter Trevor Marcotte allowed in his seven innings.

It went to the ninth tied, and after Sioux City could not capitalize on a two-on, nobody out chance, Jake Whitesides singled to start the home half. Following a pop out, Terrell Merriman singled him around to third. On the first pitch to Mark Burke, reliever Mike Nunes delivered a wild pitch scoring Whitesides and giving St. Joe their sixth win in a row.

The 'Snakes had just five hits-two in the ninth-while Sioux City had just four against Graves.

St. Joe will take the six-game winning streak on the road for their first southern swing. After a nearly 1,200 mile bus trip, they will take on the El Paso Diablos Tuesday night at Cohen Stadium in El Paso. Evan Thomas (2-3) will look to continue his strong pitching against El Paso's Andy Torres. Game time is 7:05pm and the broadcast starts at 6:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
